Long Beach and Yaupon Beach grew from a few cottages to about 300 following the second world war. In 1954 the island was almost completely destroyed by hurricane Hazel. Only 5 of the original 300 houses were still standing. In 1955 Long beach and Yaupon Beach incorperated, and builders, E.F. Middleton and G.V. Barbee, discovered that building on the wooded side of the island near Davis creek was safer from the high winds of the hurricanes, homes and businesses shot up. Long Beach and Yaupon Beach merged in 1999 to become Oak Island, named for the old majestic oak trees that inhabit the Island. Today the year round population is around 7,000 and it swells to 50,000 during the peak summer months. The area has experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. There are many activities and attractions on Oak Island including a public golf course, 3 fishing piers, walking trails, tennis and basketball courts, a scenic walkway along the Davis Canal, over 50 public beach accesses and much more. The historic town of Southport is located at the mouth of Cape Fear River just a few miles from the island. There you can find art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, ferry service to Fort Fisher and Bald Head Island and many other attractions and activities. The port city of Wilmington is just 30 miles north of Oak Island. The city is known for its rich history and is one of the oldest seaports in the country. It too offers museums, gardens, shopping, historic tours and an exciting night life. |
